I have these pictures of Christy hung all around our house. 
I always have. I never knew her. In my worst imaginings of Alzheimer's, I never thought Craig would ever forget her.
Once again my naivete has gotten the better of me.
Evilly, the Alzheimer's has stolen all of Christy from Craig.
I was stunned when I brought her up a few days ago and Craig said,
"I don't remember her".
Nothing, nada.
Around Christmas this was an issue, he knew he was married to her, but couldn't quite remember her. Andy put together a beautifully framed collage of his mother for Craig for Christmas. When Craig opened it, he just stared at it and started to cry. He wanted so much to remember, but the memories were not quite a whisper.
Now they are completely gone. 35 years together, 3 children, her battle with breast cancer and her death.
All forgotten.
You hear how Alzheimer's goes backwards and the victim forgets the most recent things first. Apparently this is not how it has affected Craig.
All three boys will be in town next month at the same time. I am ecstatic about this!! It is very rare that they are all here at once. Sometimes Craig can't quite remember what the birth order is, or where Kyle or Chip live but he definitely knows each one and
loves them dearly.
Craig is over the moon that they will ALL be here!
My heart breaks for them. They are truly wonderful, loving, sons.
My heart is ripped in every direction.
UPDATE: Today (3/1/11) I was pointing out some pictures on the collage that Andy put together for Craig at Christmas and I asked Craig about a few pictures and he remembered some things about Christy!! He said he remembered being in Hawaii with her, Greece and a couple of other trips they went on. I'm so happy. Must be your prayers♥
I've said it before and I'll say it again, Alzheimer's is a weird disease. Not only confusing Craig, but has those of us around him scratching our heads as well!
